Son of John McKinley of County Antrim Ireland and his wife Mary Kerr of Lilliesleaf, Roxboroughshire, Scotland who he met in Montreal, John Kerr McKinley is named after his mother's father who died in Montreal in 1849. A very successful plumber and gasfitter in the capital city region his firm was credited with installing the first hot water boiler in Ontario.
